I moved into our Austin home over a month ago, but this past weekend was the first time I got that “this feels like home” feeling.
First, our move was a quick and somewhat stressful one. We knew that we had our honeymoon planned for the beginning of April and we needed to be out of our Lumberton home by April 1, so we decided to find a rent home in Austin as quickly as possible, pack everything up, and move out of our Lumberton home at the beginning of March instead of waiting. We got married in December, had our receptions in January, spent a few weekends in February driving to Austin to look at houses, and we (or at least I) was fully moved by March 18.
To make it work I had to pack up our entire Lumberton home in A DAY. I was still working from home during the madness, so, with no stove or refrigerator, half of our things in Austin and half in Lumberton, I still had to work the last week in Lumberton with nothing but a blow-up mattress to sit on. It was insane, but, once I got back into the office and started getting everything settled in the new place, things leveled out for me.
Andy, on the other hand, had much bigger issues to deal with. He’s had to contend with moving, not just our home, but his entire business. Which means, during these last (almost) two months, we have been living apart as he has been staying with his parents while finishing up ongoing jobs in the Beaumont area. We have been taking turns driving back and forth on the weekends to see each other, but weekends are usually busy, and it seems I’m spending most of my time just missing my new husband.
It was his turn to drive to Austin this past weekend and, while still busy, we ended up spending more time than usually allowed just being together. It was refreshing! I planted my little garden, adding some plants I didn’t venture to try last year, and we spent time just playing with Gigi and enjoying the beautiful weather. We even went to see End Game – yes! – and spent some time on Sunday catching up with friends. It was a perfect weekend and left me with that home feeling I haven’t felt in months. Only three more weeks until he is moved for good! Until then, it’s my turn to drive this weekend.
